Toxics Reform Any Mother Would Love
Take Action to Support the Safe Chemicals Act of 2010
We owe a lot to our moms. Among numerous day-to-day labors of love, they did their best to protect us and make sure we grew up healthy. This year, moms are on the forefront of a huge movement to get toxic chemicals out of our food, our water and our homes. >>In honor of Mother's Day this year, take action to support the Safe Chemicals Act!
Moms have their hands full trying to keep kids safe, and many also strive to protect them from all kinds of environmental toxics. They make important choices to buy pesticide-free foods and switch to least-toxic alternatives to pesticides and cleaners. But, as scientists are learning more about the harmful effects of chemicals from agriculture, manufacturing and other industries, we're understanding more and more that consumer choices aren't enough to protect our families from toxics. The problem of toxic pollution has gotten too big to shop our way out!
Luckily, we have a great opportunity to tackle this growing problem head on. The "Safe Chemicals Act of 2010" was recently introduced in Congress. This ambitious bill would revamp the Toxic Substances Control Act, a 34-year-old law that governs the production and use of toxic chemicals in the US, influencing everything from baby bottles to cars, and pesticides too. Perhaps most notable, the bill would put the burden on chemical manufacturers to prove chemicals are safe before they arrive in the marketplace. That's reform any mother would love!
