North Carolina, It's Time for a Harvest of Dignity.
On November 18th - one week before Thanksgiving - Toxic Free NC and our partners at the Farmworker Advocacy Network launched the Harvest of Dignity campaign with a press conference and Thanksgiving-themed luncheon in Raleigh. Please join us in launching this exciting campaign for dignity and justice by making a photo or video postcard!
The Harvest of Dignity's campaign platform includes reforms identified by North Carolina farm and poultry workers as the most critical. These include safe places to work, safe and sanitary places to live, and stronger enforcement of the farm safety rules that we already have on the books in NC, because no employer should be able to get away with ignoring the law and putting people in harm's way.
The deplorable working and living conditions faced by many field and poultry workers in today's North Carolina are hauntingly reminiscent of scenes from Edward R. Murrow's 1960 documentary Harvest of Shame.
Today, in honor of the 50th anniversary of that groundbreaking documentary, we are calling you to stand up for the dignity of your fellow human beings and neighbors in this state, just as Edward R. Murrow called our parents and grandparents to stand up all those decades ago. Will you stand up for a Harvest of Dignity?
In truth, our own dignity and health are tied up with that of the farm workers. They work at the source of a stream of pesticide pollution that affects everyone who eats, drinks and breathes in this state. So, do it for the workers, do it for our state, and do it for yourself: Make a Harvest of Dignity photo or video postcard!

Make a photo or video postcard to support a Harvest of Dignity!
It's a fun and easy way to lend your face, your voice, and your own words to the cause of dignity for farm workers. Follow these simple instructions:
Step 1: Make a statement.
It should fit legibly on one piece of paper, and/or take about 15 seconds to say on film. You can use your own words, or borrow some of ours:
It's time for a Harvest of Dignity, North Carolina!
I support farm workers beacause I eat.
Health, safety and dignity for farm workers, and for all.
I support a Harvest of Dignity for farm workers, and for everyone who eats the food they pick!
Step 2: Take a photo or video - or both!
Use a digital camera, webcam, flipcam or whatever you have to take a picture of yourself with your statement written legibly on a piece of paper, or take a video of yourself saying your statement loud and clear. (Having a friend on hand to hold the camera might help!)
Step 3: Send your photo or video file to
Be sure to include your contact information and the statement "I hereby release this photo/video for use by Toxic Free NC and the NC Farmworker Advocacy Network as part of the Harvest of Dignity Campaign."
Step 4: Show it off and link it up!
Post your photo or video postcard on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Flickr and other social networking sites today and throughout the holiday season to let people know you support a Harvest of Dignity. Include a link to this action alert, so your friends and family can learn about the campaign and make postcards of their own! And of course, you can post your photos and videos to Toxic Free NC's Facebook page, too! |
