Ask Gov. Perdue to Appoint Debbie Roos and Andrea Reusing to the new NC Sustainable Local Food Advisory Council

How can we serve fresh, local food to children in our schools? How can backyard and community gardens be used to fight hunger? Where can entrepreneurs get the support they need to get locally-grown foods out to more dinner plates? What is the future of sustainable agriculture in North Carolina?

The new North Carolina Sustainable Local Food Advisory Council has a big job to do. We all worked together to make sure that the legislature created this important Council, and now it’s time to make sure that the best experts get appointed. The Council will be made up of farmers, hunger and nutrition experts, representatives of government, food retailers and many others.

The Governor is currently considering whom to appoint to two important positions representing the food service industry and Cooperative Extension. Please take a moment to urge the Governor to appoint two local experts – Chatham extension agent Debbie Roos and chef Andrea Reusing – to this exciting new Council that will help chart the future of sustainable agriculture in our state.

Dear Governor Perdue,

You have a great opportunity to advance the growth of sustainable, local foods in North Carolina through the new North Carolina Sustainable Local Food Advisory Council.  As you consider whom to appoint to this Council, I urge you to consider two extraordinary women who will bring a world of expertise to this important venture:

Andrea Reusing is the chef and owner of Lantern, a Chapel Hill restaurant nationally recognized and respected for its commitment to local farms and foods.  Ms. Reusing knows well how to bring restaurants and farmers together, and would bring a passion for sustainably-grown, local foods to the position representing the food services/retail food industry.

Debbie Roos is the Agricultural Extension Agent at the Chatham County Center.  She has worked with local farmers for over ten years and has won numerous awards for her sustainable agriculture program.  Ms. Roos is a critical resource for small, sustainable North Carolina farms, and would bring a wealth of knowledge to the position representing Cooperative Extension.

Thank you for your commitment to growing sustainable, local farms.  I eagerly anticipate the progress that this new Council will help to make in our state.

Sincerely,

[YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS HERE]
