We’re pleased to write with some exciting updates from our work at the NC General Assembly this year with our allies in the NC Sustainable Food Systems Coalition:

Sustainable Local Food Advisory Council - creates a food policy council made up of organic, sustainable and conventional NC farmers, food distributors, hunger advocates, sustainable farming advocates, and other people who bring important perspectives on food and farming. The Council will strategize on building a more local and sustainable food system for our state, and make recommendations to the General Assembly. Full text of the bill as passed. Appointments to the Council are currently in progress – stay tuned!

Farmland Preservation Trust Fund - makes grants to help keep family farms in business and profitable by protecting farmland and investing in agricultural development projects.
Changes to the Trust Fund’s authorizing language will ensure a continued emphasis on sustainable agriculture projects. Full text of the bill as passed. Additionally, $2 million were allocated to the Fund, a coup in such a difficult budget year. Kudos to Representative Pricey Harrison (D-Guilford) for her tireless work on this issue. You can learn more about the Fund at www.ncadfp.org.
