Summer in the Fields

Hi! I'm Laura Valencia, a summer intern at Toxic Free NC through the Into the Fields program at Student Action with Farmworkers. I grew up in Michigan and am a rising sophomore at The College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio.
This summer, I worked in the office and in the field with farmworkers for ten weeks. My assignment at Toxic Free NC was to combine my video and audio editing and Spanish skills to create four short web videos about gardening, farm workers and pesticides.
Toxic Free NC staffer Ana Duncan Pardo and I visited several migrant labor camps to conduct interviews about workers’ experiences with pesticides. Our travels have taken us to tiny houses with beautiful gardens, appalling barracks filled with exhausted workers, muddy tobacco fields and even a Spanish church service!
