Fall at the Farmers' Market
I look forward all week to going to the Carrboro
Farmers market. It always lifts my spirits to see the market
in full swing. It is a friendly place—a place where
you can stop and chat with the vendors, meet friends, and
see people you may not have seen recently. Many vendors provide
samples of their wares. You can buy one tomato or ten pounds
of tomatoes. (I myself have never bought just one tomato!)
The variety is extraordinary! Fall brings cooler
weather—and it is a perfect time to visit the market.
There are still most summer vegetables: Tomatoes, peppers,
cucumbers, zucchini eggplant and some okra. And fruits: melons,
figs, some blueberries and pears. There’s also more
fall produce: Lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, winter squash,
pumpkins, pecans and persimmons.
At the Carrboro Farmers’ Market, there
are also vendors who sell homemade cheeses, quiches, cookies
and cakes. Shoppers can buy home-cured bacon, free-range
eggs, homemade pasta, jellies and jams. Farm raised lamb
and chicken are also available. And there are some booths
with crafts, bouquets, quilts and beautiful dried-flower
cards. The market has everything you need to make wonderful
and healthy meals. Here’s an idea to help get you started!
Baked Winter Squash
Cut squash in half. Wrap in foil and
bake at 350 until tender. Remove from foil. Carefully
scoop out squash, saving the skins. Combine squash
with 1/2 tsp. butter, about a tsp. Worcestershire
sauce, and 1/2 tsp. brown sugar. Place back in skins.
Sprinkle with grated cheddar cheese. Bake for 10
minutes or until cheese has melted. |
